Allegation of Research Misconduct
Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy
The Indonesian Health Science Journal (IHSJ) recognizes the potential benefits of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in academic writing and scholarly publishing. This policy establishes principles for the responsible, transparent, and ethical use of AI by authors, editors, and reviewers to protect scientific integrity, confidentiality, and publication quality.
1. AI Is Not Permitted as an Author
AI tools, including generative AI systems and large language models, cannot be listed as authors or co-authors. Authorship requires human accountability, intellectual contribution, and responsibility for the integrity of the work.
2. Guidelines for AI Use by Authors
Authors may use AI tools responsibly to support manuscript preparation, provided that AI does not replace their intellectual contribution or scientific judgment. Authors must independently verify all AI-generated content, including facts, references, data, interpretations, and conclusions.
AI must not be used to fabricate or falsify data, generate misleading results, manipulate images inappropriately, or misrepresent scientific findings.
3. Mandatory Disclosure of AI Use
Authors must disclose the use of generative AI tools in manuscript preparation, including the tool's name and purpose of use. The disclosure should be included in a separate section titled Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies before the references.
If no generative AI tools were used in preparing the manuscript, authors should state this where required by the journal's submission guidelines.
4. Permitted Uses and Limitations of AI
Permitted uses include language editing, grammar correction, translation, improving readability, and assisting with the organization of ideas or preliminary literature exploration.
AI must not replace the author's critical analysis, generate fabricated citations or research data, or be used in ways that violate research ethics, copyright, privacy, or applicable data-protection requirements. Authors must verify the accuracy and appropriateness of all AI-assisted outputs.
5. Use of AI by Editors
Editors may use AI tools for limited administrative or language-support tasks, provided confidentiality is maintained and the tools do not replace editorial judgment. AI must not independently determine manuscript acceptance, rejection, or publication priority.
Editors remain responsible for verifying AI-assisted outputs and managing potential bias and conflicts of interest.
6. Use of AI by Reviewers
Reviewers must not use AI tools to replace substantive peer review or delegate the critical evaluation of a manuscript to AI. Reviewers must independently assess the manuscript's originality, methodology, results, interpretation, and scientific contribution.
Reviewers must comply with confidentiality requirements and must not upload unpublished manuscripts or identifiable manuscript content to external AI tools without explicit authorization from the journal and appropriate safeguards.
7. Manuscript Confidentiality and Data Protection
Authors, editors, and reviewers must protect unpublished manuscripts, personal information, confidential research data, and intellectual property when using AI tools. Manuscript content must not be entered into AI systems that may retain, disclose, or use the content beyond authorized purposes.
Any AI-assisted activity must comply with the journal's confidentiality requirements and applicable data-protection standards.
8. Human Responsibility for Editorial Decisions
All editorial decisions, including acceptance, revision, and rejection, must be made by qualified human editors. AI tools may support limited administrative tasks but must not replace human evaluation, editorial independence, or professional judgment.
9. Accountability for AI-Assisted Content
Authors retain full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, integrity, and ethical compliance of their manuscripts, including content produced or modified with AI assistance.
Editors and reviewers are likewise responsible for their professional judgments and any AI-assisted work undertaken within their roles. The use of AI does not exempt any party from accountability for errors, misconduct, or breaches of confidentiality.
10. Policy Compliance and Misconduct
Failure to disclose AI use when required, misuse of AI, fabricated references or data, or violations of confidentiality may result in editorial action, including requests for clarification, manuscript rejection, or other measures consistent with the journal's publication ethics policy.
IHSJ may review and update this policy in response to developments in AI technology and scholarly publishing standards. All parties are expected to comply with the latest published version of this policy.
